Sassuolo forward Sebastiano Esposito has spoken of his immense pride after receiving his first senior Italy call-up, an experience made even more special by sharing it with his younger brother, Francesco Pio Esposito.
The brothers are part of the Italy squad preparing for their Nations League campaign, which begins with a match against Belgium on Friday. This marks a significant milestone for Sebastiano, who recently found the net in Sassuolo’s 3-2 victory over Juventus.
A Family Affair for the Azzurri
Speaking to Vivo Azzurro TV, Sebastiano Esposito shared insights into the atmosphere within the national team camp. He revealed that Italy manager Roberto Mancini had a clear message for the new arrivals: ‘enjoy it’.
Sebastiano emphasised the unique emotions of representing the national team, stating that doing so alongside his brother amplifies the experience. He also highlighted the importance of understanding the responsibilities of playing for Italy from a young age, a lesson he believes is crucial for a player’s development.
Both Sebastiano and Francesco Pio Esposito honed their skills through the youth ranks at Inter, participating in various tournaments together. This shared journey has forged a strong bond between them, which Sebastiano described as built on love.
From Youth Ranks to Senior Squad
The Esposito brothers’ connection extends beyond the pitch. Sebastiano recounted an amusing childhood anecdote, revealing that Francesco Pio was often placed in goal due to his shorter stature, with his older brothers teasing him when he missed a save. He expressed relief that his younger sibling did not pursue a career as a goalkeeper.
Despite their professional careers taking them to various cities, the brothers maintain a strong connection to their hometown of Castellammare di Stabia, which Sebastiano affectionately calls ‘the most beautiful city in the world’. They return whenever possible to support their community.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Nations League fixture, Sebastiano Esposito conveyed his excitement and anticipation. He noted that both he and Francesco Pio possess a ‘pinch of recklessness’, a trait they hope will serve them well as they embark on this new chapter with the national team.
