Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín have reconciled, putting an end to a summer-long dispute that arose from Barcelona’s pursuit of striker Julián Álvarez. The two club leaders smoothed over their differences during the 33rd General Assembly of the European Football Clubs (EFC).

The disagreement between the two La Liga giants had been a notable institutional clash, sparked by Barcelona’s interest in Álvarez during the recent transfer window. Atlético Madrid’s hierarchy had expressed irritation over Barcelona’s approach to a player under contract, leading to public criticism.

A Diplomatic Embrace

Speaking after the EFC assembly, Laporta confirmed the reconciliation, stating that he and Gil Marín had “hugged” and that he was sure they had “smoothed things over.” He added that the conclusion of the transfer window played a significant role in allowing both clubs to move past the disagreement and avoid it spilling into the new season.

The Barcelona president’s comments indicate a clear shift in tone, signalling an end to the tensions that had been visible between the two prominent Spanish clubs. The resolution of the transfer window meant the immediate point of contention was no longer active, facilitating the mending of ties.

Wider Diplomatic Efforts

The EFC assembly in Copenhagen also marked Barcelona’s full return to participation in the organisation. Laporta had previously attended an assembly as a guest, but at this meeting, Barcelona were reinstated as full members with voting rights. This move was publicly welcomed by EFC leader and Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Furthermore, Laporta used the gathering to improve his relationship with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. Their ties had been strained since the inception of the European Super League project in 2021. The reconciliation with Atlético Madrid comes as part of Barcelona’s broader efforts to rebuild and strengthen its relationships across the European football landscape.
