Barcelona have abandoned their pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez following a formal complaint over alleged unauthorised contact, leaving the Argentine World Cup winner on course to remain under Diego Simeone for the upcoming campaign.

The Catalan club concluded that conditions were no longer viable to complete a deal after Atlético lodged complaints with the Royal Spanish Football Federation and FIFA. The Madrid club accused their rivals of tapping up and attempting to destabilise the forward, with an investigation now underway requiring both sides to present their positions to the authorities.

Barcelona withdraw to avoid escalation

Rather than risk further sanctions or a protracted legal dispute that could damage relations with governing bodies, Barcelona chose to end all negotiations immediately. The club had identified Álvarez as a priority target earlier in the window, and reports indicated the player had privately expressed interest in joining the Catalan side before the controversy erupted.

Atlético, however, maintained an uncompromising stance throughout the saga, refusing to negotiate with a direct domestic rival regardless of the fee tabled. This position effectively blocked any realistic path to a transfer between the two La Liga clubs, forcing Barcelona to concede defeat in their efforts to secure the versatile forward.

The urgency within Barcelona’s recruitment team has also eased significantly following the recent signing of Anthony Gordon. That arrival provides the coaching staff with additional attacking options and reduces the pressure to force through a deal that sources described as virtually impossible while Atlético remain unwilling to sell to a competitor.

Arsenal retreat as Álvarez prepares for pre-season

Arsenal, previously heavily linked with the 24-year-old, have also lost momentum in their pursuit. With Barcelona out of contention and the Gunners stepping back from advanced negotiations, the international market currently offers few immediate alternatives for Álvarez should he seek an immediate exit.

The striker is presently following an individualised training programme designed specifically for international players. He is maintaining regular contact with Atlético’s medical department ahead of officially joining pre-season preparations, and the club fully expect him to report for duty as scheduled. This structured return effectively draws a line under a summer dominated by intense transfer speculation.

Atlético’s priority remains retaining one of their most important attacking assets as they aim to challenge for major honours this season. However, the club privately acknowledge that a massive offer from elsewhere in the Premier League could still shift their position while the window remains open. For the immediate future, Álvarez looks set to spearhead the attack for Simeone’s side.
