Bayer Leverkusen‘s experienced midfielder Jonas Hofmann has hinted at a potential move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the future, expressing a desire for a new adventure once his current contract expires in 2027.
The 34-year-old, who turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window, stated his intention to continue playing for another two or three years. Hofmann acknowledged the intense competition for playing time at Bayer Leverkusen but remains relaxed about his situation.
Speaking to Kicker.de, Hofmann revealed his thoughts on playing abroad. “We [he and his family] can very well imagine going abroad, because now, of course, the enjoyment factor is also important,” he explained. He added, “I don’t know if anyone in Germany is still interested in a 35-year-old. It could even involve crossing the ocean,” a clear reference to the MLS.
Hofmann emphasised his longing for a fresh challenge. “I just want to do something completely different. At some point, you might feel like you just want to get away, see something new, have an adventure,” he concluded.
Despite the speculation about his future, Hofmann was content to remain with Bayer Leverkusen, where his contract runs until 2027. His decision to stay came despite the Saudi offer, which he indicated “just didn’t all work out” for reasons “less to do with personal matters.”
With his contract set to conclude after what would be four successful years with Leverkusen, Hofmann’s comments suggest a clear path towards an overseas move as he approaches the twilight of his career, seeking a different experience in football.
