Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed a significant squad boost ahead of Saturday evening’s Serie A encounter against Frosinone. Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Allegri confirmed: “The news is that McTominay will be called up and we will have him available for at least 20-30 minutes,” following his recovery from a minor heart procedure.
The news comes as a welcome relief for the Partenopei, who have been grappling with a series of injuries. However, the club still faces challenges with Antonio Vergara and Costantino Favasuli sidelined for longer periods. Defender Mathias Olivera is expected to return within a week, while Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is also in recovery. Allegri also noted the return of Marianucci, Badiashile, and Marin, expressing confidence in his squad’s depth.
Injury Concerns and Fiorentina Frustration
Despite the positive update on McTominay, Allegri acknowledged the ongoing injury situation. He also reflected on Napoli’s recent 1-1 draw against Fiorentina before the international break, admitting his frustration with the team’s inability to secure a victory. Allegri highlighted a perceived lack of understanding among his players regarding crucial moments in games, suggesting it was not a technical or tactical issue but rather a mental one impacting results.
During the extended international break, Napoli utilised the time to work on conditioning and tactical ideas. The squad played two friendlies, one against Avellino and an internal match, to maintain fitness and provide opportunities for players with fewer minutes.
Allegri’s Theory on Player Workload
Addressing the club’s injury pile-up in the early stages of the 2026-27 season, Allegri put forward an interesting theory regarding player workload in European football. He suggested that the actual playing time in Serie A matches is longer compared to some other major leagues, such as the Premier League. He theorised that this difference, when accumulated over 50 or 60 games, results in European players effectively playing an extra six or seven matches over a season, contributing to increased fatigue and injury risks.
Allegri also briefly commented on the international performances of Rasmus Hojlund and Kevin De Bruyne, noting their goal-scoring exploits for their national teams. He mentioned that players like Lobotka, Gilmour, Neres, Lang, Spinazzola, and Politano are all in good physical condition and have been working hard.
Looking Ahead to Frosinone and Villarreal
Napoli’s immediate focus is on securing a vital victory against Frosinone. Allegri praised their opponents, describing them as a team that is “doing really well,” running effectively, and possessing good technique. He stressed the importance of taking all three points from the home fixture.
Beyond Saturday’s Serie A clash, Napoli will also begin preparations for an upcoming European fixture against Villarreal. Allegri underscored that the Frosinone match marks the beginning of an important month for the club, with the return of key players expected to eliminate excuses for future performances.
