Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has publicly defended Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti, urging the club to grant him sufficient time to navigate their current challenges. Buffon’s comments come in the wake of a significant Serie A defeat and a notable post-match outburst from a key defender.
Recent Setback and League Position
Pressure has been mounting on Spalletti after Juventus suffered a comprehensive 3-0 home defeat against Lazio in Serie A. This result left the Turin giants eight points adrift of the league leaders after just seven games of the 2026-27 season, raising concerns among fans and pundits alike.
Bremer’s Outburst and Apology
Adding to the tension, Juventus centre-back Bremer made headlines with a post-match outburst, accusing some of his teammates of getting ‘scared’ and ‘hiding’ during the match. However, reports indicate that Bremer has since apologised to his colleagues for his comments.
Buffon, a former Juventus and Italy legend, expressed his understanding for Bremer’s emotional reaction. He related it to his own playing days, stating he too had acted instinctively in similar situations. ‘I understand Bremer’s outburst,’ Buffon remarked, adding that such moments were never planned but felt right at the time. He also emphasised the importance of self-reflection, even when criticising others.
Buffon’s Defence of Spalletti
The former goalkeeper pointed to a significant injury crisis as a primary reason for Juventus’s current difficulties. Buffon highlighted the absence of key players such as Yildiz, Locatelli, Thuram, Ekhator, Milik, and Grabara. He likened their collective absence to a national team losing several of its most iconic figures, underscoring the depth of the challenge facing Spalletti. Buffon also noted the demanding schedule, including a match against Celta Vigo just three days prior to the Lazio game, following a long journey.
Buffon firmly believes that Spalletti is the right man for the job and should be given the opportunity to see his work through. He stressed the importance of stability, stating, ‘The problem can’t just be the coach if you fire five of them in four years.’
Club’s Continued Backing
Despite the recent struggles and the growing pressure, reports indicate that Juventus will continue to give Luciano Spalletti their full backing for the time being, aligning with Buffon’s call for patience and continuity.
