Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu has spoken out about his side’s challenging start to their Champions League campaign, admitting the team is “not perfect” and faces significant external pressure. His comments came during a pre-match press conference ahead of Inter’s crucial Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Despite an unbeaten run in Serie A, where Inter currently leads the table, their European form has been a stark contrast. The Nerazzurri have yet to secure a point in the Champions League this season, having suffered defeats to Real Madrid and Club Brugge in their opening two matches. This extends a concerning trend, with Inter having lost seven of their last eight Champions League fixtures, including matches from the previous season.

Chivu on Expectations and Responsibility

Chivu acknowledged the team’s struggles in Europe but pushed back against what he perceives as excessive expectations. “There’s a feeling that Inter have an obligation to win where others don’t,” he stated, suggesting this pressure is “not good.” He emphasised that the team is “not perfect as a team, nor as individuals,” and that they have “a few problems.”

The manager also took personal responsibility for the team’s shortcomings, particularly their tendency to start matches slowly. “If we start badly, it’s my fault,” Chivu admitted, adding, “I’m the main culprit and it’s right that I should be.” He also noted that he could improve in terms of communication and ensuring the team’s motivation and attention.

Chivu highlighted that responsibilities are mutual within the squad, recalling that their successful season last year was a result of collective accountability. He also pointed out Inter’s resilience in Serie A, where they have come from behind in four of their seven league matches this season, demonstrating a capacity to react to adversity.

Facing Shakhtar Donetsk

Looking ahead to the match against Shakhtar Donetsk, Chivu described their opponents as a “strong team” playing in the Champions League. He praised their “legs, intensity, quality and a coach who always sets them up well on the pitch,” anticipating a difficult encounter. For Inter, securing a victory against Shakhtar is paramount to revive their hopes of progressing in the competition.
