Bayer Leverkusen head coach Carles Martinez has lauded young midfielder Ibrahim Maza, expressing an ambitious hope that the player could one day lift the Ballon d’Or. This comes after Maza secured a ninth-place finish in the Kopa Trophy voting, an award recognising the world’s best young player under 21. The prestigious accolade was ultimately won by FC Barcelona‘s Lamine Yamal.

Martinez’s High Praise

Martinez’s comments highlight the high regard in which Maza is held at the German club. “I hope ‘Ibo’ wins the Ballon d’Or one day,” Martinez stated, according to Bild. He added, “A year ago, hardly anyone would have thought he would be there yesterday. Nobody knows how life will unfold. The only thing that matters is that he continues to work hard.”

The Leverkusen coach also praised Maza’s character and team-oriented approach. “He’s a top guy, and everyone likes him because he helps others and isn’t selfish,” Martinez explained. “For me, that quality is the most important thing, both as a teammate and as a person. His talent gets a lot of attention, but we have to keep developing him and helping him improve.”

A Rapid Ascent at Leverkusen

Maza’s recognition in the Kopa Trophy marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. He made the switch to Bayer Leverkusen from Hertha BSC in the summer of 2025, and his performances have quickly established him as a player with considerable potential. The Kopa Trophy nomination itself is a testament to his rapid development and impact since joining the Bundesliga side.

Fending Off Transfer Interest

Maza’s impressive displays have reportedly attracted interest from several top clubs, including French giants Paris Saint-Germain. However, Martinez is not entertaining thoughts of a potential transfer, emphasising Leverkusen’s commitment to the player. “I’m not thinking about that. We’re very happy with him, and we want him to stay here for many more years,” Martinez affirmed. Maza is currently under contract with Leverkusen until 2030, underscoring the club’s long-term plans for the attacking midfielder.
