Key Takeaways

  • Morgan Gibbs-White has scored six Premier League goals since March, more than any other English player.
  • The Nottingham Forest attacker was left out of England’s latest 35-man squad but still hopes for a late World Cup call.
  • Experts believe a strong finish to the season plus an injury or two could open the door for the 26-year-old.

Nottingham Forest play-maker Morgan Gibbs-White has four weeks to show England boss Thomas Tuchel he is worth a place at the 2025 FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old reminded everyone of his talent on Sunday by smashing a hat-trick past Burnley, taking his league tally to six in eight matches since March. No Englishman has found the net more often in that spell.

Yet Gibbs-White was missing when Tuchel named 35 players for recent friendlies against Japan and Uruguay. The final 23-man roster must be sent to world football chiefs by 30 May, leaving the Forest star a short window to force his way in.

He already has six senior caps, but only 89 minutes of pitch time. His last appearance came in a 3-0 win over Wales in October, and he has never started for the Three Lions.

Competition for the number-10 role is fierce. Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham were all picked last month and sit above him in the pecking order.

Stats underline Gibbs-White’s value to his club: he has played 2,819 minutes this season, more than a thousand above Palmer, and his 12 Premier League goals are bettered only by Brighton veteran Danny Welbeck among Englishmen. Only Foden and Bellingham create chances more often per 90 minutes.

On the flip side, he averages fewer touches in the opposition box, carries the ball less and wins it back only 3.1 times a match — numbers that may worry Tuchel.

Forest paid Wolves up to £42.5 million for the midfielder in 2022. He rewarded them by helping secure survival in 2023 and a seventh-place finish last term. This season he has been vital again, scoring in a 1-1 draw at Manchester City and a priceless win at Tottenham.

Scott Sellars, who nurtured Gibbs-White in the Wolves academy, insists the player is ready. “His attitude and quality have always been top,” Sellars said. “If one or two drop out, he can go and shine on the biggest stage.”

The clock is ticking. England open their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on 17 June. Gibbs-White’s final audition starts this weekend at Sunderland.
