VfL Wolfsburg have yet to appoint a new managing director for sport. The German side fired Peter Christiansen from the position nearly two months ago.

Diego Benaglio, a member of the club’s supervisory board, is handling the recruitment process alongside chairman Sebastian Rudolph. He recently spoke to the press about the lengthy search.

Benaglio confirmed that discussions with potential candidates are progressing well. However, he made it clear that the club values quality over speed. “It is important for us to find the right person. It does not help if we just act quickly to resolve the situation,” he told Kicker.

The former Switzerland goalkeeper admitted that the talent pool is limited. Most suitable candidates already hold positions at other clubs. “There are certainly candidates who already have a contract. It is very rare in this position to find many unemployed people on the market. By nature, most of the qualified ones are employed somewhere,” he stated.

Wolfsburg currently occupy the relegation play-off spot in the Bundesliga table. The team might face demotion to the 2. Bundesliga next season. Despite this uncertainty, Benaglio demands total commitment from the new hire.

He warned that any candidate who stalls to see which division the club plays in next term will be dismissed from consideration. “A candidate who from the outset signals that he is only interested in the Bundesliga would, for me, be the wrong candidate,” he stressed.
