Sevilla FC claimed a massive win in their battle for survival, defeating Real Sociedad 1-0 to escape the La Liga drop zone. The match took place on Sunday evening at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium in Seville.
The home side took all three points through sheer determination and hard work. Alexis Sánchez found the back of the net in the second half to give his team the lead. This result damages Real Sociedad’s hopes of finishing fifth and qualifying for the Champions League.
The first half proved tense and tight. Neither team took control of the game. Chidera Ejuke created the best chance for the visitors when he cut inside from the right and forced a strong save from goalkeeper Álex Remiro. However, neither side deserved to lead at the break.
After half-time, Sevilla came out with more energy. A cross from the right reached Neal Maupay inside the box. The striker held the ball well and passed it to Sánchez. The Chilean forward took one touch and fired a powerful shot into the corner of the net. The home crowd erupted in celebration.
Real Sociedad tried to get back into the match but found it difficult against Sevilla’s tough defence. The hosts almost scored again midway through the second half. Sánchez broke down the right and passed to Rubén Vargas in the centre, but the midfielder shot over the crossbar.
Later in the game, substitute Lucien Agoume thought he had doubled the lead from a set-piece, but officials ruled the goal out for offside. Despite this, Sevilla remained solid at the back and kept their opponents away from danger.
The win moves Sevilla one point clear of Deportivo Alavés, who sit in 18th place. This performance matched the promise made by captain Nemanja Gudelj earlier in the week. He told supporters that the team would avoid relegation through hard work and team spirit. Manager Luis García Plaza will praise his players for their fighting attitude. In contrast, Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo will worry about his team’s flat performance.
Sevilla now face another crucial match when they host RCD Espanyol on Saturday. Real Sociedad will play against Real Betis, but they now trail their city rivals by ten points. They also sit four points behind RC Celta de Vigo in sixth place, shifting their focus to the Europa League spots instead.
