Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has stepped up his media appearances this week by giving another explosive interview to Spanish television. The 78-year-old spoke to La Sexta on Wednesday, shortly after his controversial press conference dominated headlines across Europe.
During the television appearance, Perez expressed surprise at how journalists portrayed his earlier comments. He insisted that behind closed doors, he has received nothing but praise from colleagues and associates. “I am somewhat surprised by the current situation,” he stated. “The media criticism does not reflect reality. I have only received messages of congratulations for what happened yesterday.”
The construction magnate also tackled the issue of supporters whistling at players during matches at the Santiago Bernabeu this season. Perez suggested that dissatisfied fans should remember the club’s glorious history under his leadership. He pointed out that during his time in charge, Real Madrid have won more European Cups than Barcelona have managed in their entire existence.
“Some people consider this insufficient,” he continued. “What country do we live in? This is an organised campaign. We have started to devalue our own achievements. Last season, we lifted the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Do these trophies no longer matter? We should not take things to absurd levels.”
Perez defended his decision to call for presidential elections, reminding everyone that the members own the club, not him. He also condemned supporters who whistle at the players, calling the behaviour unacceptable and damaging to team morale.
The most significant revelation came when Perez discussed the recent leak regarding a physical altercation between midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde. When questioned about whether officials had discovered who released the private details, he responded: “We have an idea of who it is. After this, everything descends into chaos and ruin.”
He noted that arguments between players occur every year at football clubs, but they only become public knowledge when someone intentionally releases the information to cause harm.
