- Coach Ole Werner says the captain needs rest before the summer World Cup
- Péter Gulácsi will start in goal instead of Maarten Vandevoordt
- The result against SC Freiburg will not affect Champions League qualification
David Raum will not feature in RB Leipzig’s last Bundesliga game of the campaign against SC Freiburg this Saturday. Manager Ole Werner told reporters on Friday that the left-back needs a rest.
Werner explained that the Germany international has worked very hard this year. He praised Raum for his leadership on the pitch and behind the scenes. “If we were still fighting for Champions League qualification, he would definitely feature,” the coach said. “But that is not the case. He has had a very demanding twelve months. With the World Cup coming this summer, he faces more intense work ahead. A short break will help him.”
The manager also confirmed a change between the posts. Veteran shot-stopper Péter Gulácsi will replace Maarten Vandevoordt. Vandevoordt could not complete training this week due to fitness issues.
Werner stated that Gulácsi deserves to finish the season on the pitch. He called the Hungarian one of the most important goalkeepers in the Bundesliga over the past ten years.
