Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has given his blessing to Robert Lewandowski’s decision to leave the club this summer. The Polish captain announced on Saturday that he will depart when his current deal ends in June, turning down the option to stay for another year.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s La Liga fixture with Real Betis, Flick spoke warmly about his long-standing partnership with the 37-year-old. The duo previously enjoyed success together at Bayern Munich before reuniting at the Spotify Camp Nou.

“We had a good conversation. He has been part of every title I have won,” said Flick. “It is a privilege to work with him. He keeps himself in top shape and sets the standard for young professionals. This change is positive for him, and perhaps for us too, as it allows us to rebuild the squad.”

The German boss confirmed that Lewandowski will lead the attack in his final appearance at the Camp Nou. He also admitted that replacing the goalscorer will be a major challenge.

“He will start tomorrow because he has earned it,” Flick stated. “We are looking at the market, but nothing is completed yet. Finding someone of his quality is never easy. We will miss him greatly, but we must move forward and restructure.”

Sources indicate that Barcelona’s sporting director has travelled to London to hold talks with the agent of a Chelsea forward as the search for a new number nine gathers pace.
