Lille president Olivier Létang has rejected a transfer request from striker Matias Fernandez-Pardo despite strong interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. The club chief insists the Belgian forward will remain at the Ligue 1 side for the upcoming campaign.
Fernandez-Pardo, 21, handed in the request following ongoing speculation about his future. However, Létang dismissed any prospect of an immediate exit. “The player is under contract until 2029, and his departure is not a topic,” he stated. “We are counting on him, he knows that, and we have been very clear with him.”
Why Lille are holding firm
The striker’s desire to leave is not new. He considered a move last year and still wishes to depart. Yet Lille have powerful reasons to retain their attacking option as they prepare for a return to the UEFA Champions League group stage.
The club qualified for Europe’s premier competition after finishing third in Ligue 1. They believe strong performances on that stage will significantly boost Fernandez-Pardo’s market value. Furthermore, manager Davide Ancelotti faces a shortage of senior striking options. Morocco international Hamza Igamane remains sidelined with a torn ACL sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations final, while veteran Olivier Giroud turns 40 in September. This makes Fernandez-Pardo the primary choice to lead the line.
Premier League and La Liga interest
Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have all registered interest in the versatile forward. Atlético de Madrid are also monitoring the situation, attracted by his flexibility across the front line.
The player joined Lille two years ago for a reported €10 million fee and has contributed 12 goals and 11 assists across 71 appearances. His output has marked him as one of the emerging attacking talents in French football, drawing attention from elite clubs seeking reinforcements.
What happens next
With four years remaining on his deal and the president publicly ruling out a sale, Fernandez-Pardo faces a difficult path to secure his desired move. Lille’s qualification for the Champions League provides them with financial stability and sporting prestige, reducing the pressure to cash in on key assets.
The deadlock places the 21-year-old in a challenging position. Unless one of the interested clubs submits an exceptional bid that forces a reconsideration, he appears set to remain in northern France for at least another season. For now, Létang’s stance appears unshakeable.
