1. FC Magdeburg will play in the German second division next season. This marks their fifth year in a row in this league. The team secured their place on the final day of the campaign.
Magdeburg lost their last home match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The visitors won 1-0 at the MDCC-Arena. Marlon Ritter scored the only goal from a penalty in the 63rd minute. Both sides had chances in an even contest.
The home side stayed up because other teams lost. Eintracht Braunschweig failed to beat champions Schalke. Fortuna Düsseldorf also lost their match against Greuther Fürth. These results kept Magdeburg safe despite their own defeat.
Manager Torsten Lieberknecht’s team finished with 52 points. This is the same total as SV Darmstadt 98. But Darmstadt finished sixth because they had a better goal difference. Magdeburg ended the season in 14th place. Arminia Bielefeld finished one spot higher after beating Darmstadt 6-1.
Kaiserslautern ended their season with two wins in a row. This victory gave them strong momentum heading into the summer break.
