Hannover 96 supporters left the stadium heartbroken after their team suffered a painful defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg. The result confirms that the club will spend another year in the 2. Bundesliga.
The home side began the match with great energy. Thousands of fans created an electric atmosphere inside the ground, cheering every attack. However, news of Elversberg and Paderborn taking early leads in their matches increased the tension for Christian Titz’s squad.
Nürnberg struck first against the run of play. Young forward Mohamed Ali Zoma found the net in the 25th minute with a stunning strike. The goal gave the visitors hope and put Hannover under severe pressure.
The hosts responded quickly. Kolja Oudenne smashed home an equaliser just five minutes later to make it 1-1. The crowd roared as the scores became level.
Hannover pushed forward and took the lead before half-time. Mustapha Bundu provided a perfect pass for Waniss Taibi to score. The French midfielder had replaced top scorer Benjamin Kallman in the starting eleven, and he repaid his manager’s faith with a goal and an assist.
The second half started with a shock for the home fans. Zoma scored his second goal moments after the restart. This took his tally to 14 goals for the season and levelled the match once again.
Nürnberg goalkeeper Jan Reichert produced a magnificent save to deny Mustapha Bundu’s header. However, Hannover scored from the resulting corner when the ball went into the net off defender Luka Lochoshvili.
The match continued at a frantic pace with chances for both teams. Lochoshvili made up for his earlier misfortune by heading Nürnberg back into the lead in the 85th minute.
Hannover threw everyone forward in search of a vital equaliser. They needed a win to keep their promotion hopes alive. News filtered through that Paderborn had extended their lead against Darmstadt, making Hannover’s task even harder.
Despite several late opportunities, Hannover could not find another goal. The final whistle confirmed they had finished outside the promotion places.
Manager Christian Titz has now narrowly missed out on promotion in back-to-back campaigns. He previously fell short with Magdeburg before joining Hannover.
Nürnberg ended their season in eighth position. They found the net three times in their final two matches against champions Schalke and promotion hopefuls Hannover.
Meanwhile, SV Elversberg celebrated their historic rise to the Bundesliga alongside FC Schalke 04. SC Paderborn 07 secured the playoff spot and will battle VfL Wolfsburg for the final place in next season’s top division.
