- Spain international Fermín López fractures fifth metatarsal in right foot during domestic fixture
- Injury occurred during Barcelona’s 3-1 victory against Real Betis on Sunday evening
- Scan results force the 23-year-old to undergo immediate surgery this week
- Expected recovery period of two to three months rules him out of the 2026 World Cup
- National team coach Luis de la Fuente must revise squad selection days before announcement
Spain face a major setback ahead of the 2026 World Cup after losing Barcelona midfielder Fermín López to a serious foot injury. The 23-year-old will not travel to North America this summer following the discovery of a fracture that requires an operation.
The problem started during Sunday’s clash with Real Betis at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. López began the match but could not continue past the interval due to sharp discomfort in his right foot. Initial assessments suggested a minor knock, but Monday’s medical examinations revealed much worse damage.
Hospital scans identified a clean break in the fifth metatarsal bone. Surgeons will operate to repair the fracture, effectively ending any chance of the player featuring for La Roja in the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
National team coach Luis de la Fuente now faces a selection headache just one week before naming his final group. López looked certain to earn a seat on the plane, but his absence creates space in the attacking midfield department.
Villarreal’s Alex Baena appears certain to benefit from the situation and secure his place in the squad. The door may also open for Real Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea, Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlos Soler, Villarreal’s Yeremy Pino or young Jesus Rodriguez to earn surprise call-ups.
The exact length of López’s lay-off remains unclear, though medical staff estimate between eight and twelve weeks. This timeline guarantees he will not recover before the World Cup final on 19 July. Barcelona hope their player might return for the beginning of the next campaign, though a longer absence remains possible.
