SC Freiburg stand on the brink of history. The Bundesliga club will contest their first-ever major cup final when they face Aston Villa in Wednesday’s Europa League showpiece.
Julian Schuster’s side completed their domestic season with an impressive win over RB Leipzig. The result secured their qualification for next term’s Europa Conference League. However, the final offers a greater reward. The winner will enter next season’s Champions League. This would mark Freiburg’s debut in Europe’s premier club competition.
Aston Villa have already confirmed their place at Europe’s top table. They secured Champions League qualification with a dominant victory against Liverpool. The Reds were last season’s Premier League champions.
Unai Emery leads the Birmingham club. The Spanish manager boasts a remarkable record in this tournament. He has lifted the trophy four times previously. Emery won three consecutive titles with Sevilla in the mid-2010s. He added a fourth victory with Villarreal in 2021.
Villa’s last European success came in 1982. They defeated Bayern Munich to win the European Cup in Rotterdam. Since then, they have lost every major domestic cup final they have reached this century. Emery now seeks to end that silverware drought.
Freiburg understand the pain of final defeats. They lost the 2022 German Cup final to Leipzig on penalties. Last month, they suffered another heartbreaking exit. Stuttgart beat them in the final minute of extra time in the German Cup semi-finals.
This European campaign has been historic for the German side. They have never previously advanced beyond the quarter-finals. This season, they eliminated Celta Vigo, Genk and Braga. They won every home match at the Europa-Park Stadion. This run equals Sevilla’s record for consecutive home victories in the competition.
Freiburg have limited experience against English opposition. They have only faced West Ham United in competitive fixtures. The London club eliminated them 5-1 on aggregate during the 2023/24 Europa League Round of 16.
Villa have enjoyed success against German teams. They defeated both Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig during the league phase of last season’s Champions League.
Injury concerns affect both camps. Freiburg will miss Yuito Suzuki. The Japanese forward broke his collarbone and also missed the semi-final second leg against Braga.
Villa face issues in midfield. Boubacar Kamara remains sidelined with a long-term injury. Amadou Onana is also doubtful. The Belgian has not featured since the first leg of the semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
Several Villa players have previous Bundesliga experience. Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey played for Bayer Leverkusen. Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen spent time with Borussia Dortmund.
Francois Letexier from France will referee the final. He officiated the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England.
