VfL Wolfsburg and SC Paderborn 07 have battled to a goalless draw in the opening match of their promotion-relegation playoff. The clash took place at Volkswagen Arena in mild conditions, with neither side managing to break the deadlock despite several attempts on goal.
Both clubs reached this knockout stage on the final day of the regular season. Wolfsburg finished 16th in the Bundesliga after securing a 3-1 victory over FC St. Pauli. Paderborn claimed third place in the 2. Bundesliga with a 2-0 win against SV Darmstadt 98.
The home side are desperate to maintain their top-flight status. Wolfsburg have competed in the Bundesliga since 1997 and have never suffered relegation in their 81-year history. This marks only their second appearance in these playoffs, having defeated Eintracht Braunschweig in 2017 to stay up.
Paderborn are newcomers to this playoff format. The club has earned promotion to the Bundesliga twice before by finishing second automatically, but they went straight back down on both occasions after finishing bottom of the table.
The match began with Wolfsburg controlling the early possession. After five minutes, Dženan Pejčinović flicked the ball into the penalty area, but Mattias Svanberg slipped at the crucial moment and missed the opening chance.
The visitors responded quickly with an attack down the right flank. Jeanuël Belocian cleared the danger following a cross from Laurin Curda, though Paderborn earned a corner from the pressure. Santiago Castañeda then fired a powerful shot that struck Belocian, with Svanberg clearing the rebound off the goal line.
Ruben Müller received a yellow card for bringing down Adam Daghim during a swift counter-attack. Wolfsburg continued to press forward, with Yannick Gerhardt and Saël Kumbedi combining effectively on the left wing until Castañeda made a vital interception.
In the 21st minute, Denis Vavro tested the opposition defence with a long-range effort that drifted wide of the post. Four minutes later, Daghim found space behind the defence but saw his shot blocked by Tjark Scheller. Eriksen then delivered a corner that Belocian headed over the crossbar from distance.
The hosts dominated the closing stages of the first half. At the half-hour mark, Kumbedi set up Joakim Mæhle in the centre of the box, but the Danish midfielder scuffed his shot straight at Seimen. Shortly after, Svanberg played a perfect through ball to Daghim, who rounded a defender but saw his attempt saved by the keeper’s legs.
Three minutes before the interval, Konstantinos Koulierakis launched a long pass towards Pejčinović, who could not control the ball with his outstretched boot. Eriksen had one final opportunity from a free kick, but Seimen punched his cross away confidently.
Wolfsburg led the statistics at the break with seven shots to Paderborn’s two, and held 53 per cent of possession. However, the score remained level at 0-0.
The second half began with Paderborn showing more attacking intent. Five minutes after the restart, Kumbedi broke down the right wing and crossed for Daghim, but Scheller made a crucial clearance to prevent the goal. The ball went out for a corner, which the defence dealt with comfortably.
On the hour mark, Eriksen won a free kick in a dangerous position. The Danish midfielder aimed for the bottom corner, but Seimen dived to push the ball away. The rebound fell to substitute Mohamed Amoura, whose header looked destined for the net until the young goalkeeper produced another excellent save.
Wolfsburg continued to attack as the match wore on, with Eriksen and Mæhle linking up well on the left flank. The pair tried to create openings with clever passing combinations, but Paderborn’s defence held firm. The visitors grew stronger in the final stages, slowing down the tempo to frustrate the home supporters.
Neither side managed to find the back of the net in the closing minutes. The goalless result means everything will be decided in the second leg. Wolfsburg must travel away from home knowing that victory or a scoring draw will keep them in the top flight. Paderborn will feel confident after keeping a clean sheet, though they must score in the return match to have any hope of promotion.
