Real Madrid are preparing to rebuild their midfield this summer. The Spanish giants want to fill the gap left by club legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Incoming manager Jose Mourinho has already started planning for next season. He wants the club to sign a new centre-back and midfielder. Reports suggest Mourinho has two main targets for the centre of the pitch. He likes Manchester City star Rodri. He also recommends Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand.

Sporting president Rui Borges has now confirmed Real Madrid’s interest in the Denmark international. He spoke to Cadena SER about the potential transfer.

“I see it as something normal,” Borges said. “He is a great player. He has played excellent seasons here. He plays many matches every year. Everyone can see his quality. I am not surprised that Real Madrid or other big clubs want him.”

Hjulmand does not play exactly like Kroos or Modric. However, he brings strong leadership qualities. He is currently the captain at Sporting CP. Real Madrid need this character in the dressing room after a difficult campaign.

Denmark did not qualify for the World Cup this summer. This means Hjulmand is free to negotiate. Real Madrid can start talks with Sporting CP in the coming weeks.
