AS Roma have moved to the front of the queue to sign Olympique de Marseille attacker Mason Greenwood. The 24-year-old Englishman looks set to leave the French club just one year after joining them from Manchester United.
Earlier this month, Greenwood said he wanted to stay at Marseille. However, the club’s money troubles mean they must sell their best players. Marseille spent a lot of money last summer but failed to qualify for the Champions League. This has left them in a difficult financial position.
The club must raise funds before the end of June. Greenwood is their most valuable player. No other player in the squad would bring in as much money as the former Manchester United forward.
Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Greenwood wants to play in Italy’s Serie A. Roma are his first choice. The player’s father is already talking to the Italian club about the transfer.
Marseille want around €60 million for Greenwood. The two clubs already have a good working relationship. This comes after defender Robinio Vaz moved from Roma to Marseille in January.
