Rot-Weiss Essen manager Uwe Koschinat has shown great respect to Greuther Fürth after his team failed to win promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. The German coach accepted defeat with dignity following the two-legged playoff.
Koschinat congratulated Fürth for keeping their place in the second tier. He stated that this was a question of respect and fair play. He also admitted that his side could not win either match of the tie.
The 54-year-old believed his players followed their game plan correctly at the start of the match. They created several good chances to take the lead. They also controlled the game with smart positioning during the early stages.
However, the momentum shifted after 20 minutes. Fürth forced Essen back into their own half and attacked down the flanks. Koschinat praised the “exceptional quality” of the opposition.
Essen conceded the first goal and planned tactical changes at halftime to find an equaliser. Falling two goals behind made their task much harder.
Despite this setback, Koschinat praised his team’s fighting spirit. He felt that bad luck and the performance of Fürth’s goalkeeper decided the contest.
He highlighted his players’ excellent fitness levels. They stayed organised, pressed forward, and stopped counter-attacks. They found the right balance to pull a goal back.
He mentioned that luck deserted them. Fürth goalkeeper Silas Prüfrock played brilliantly. Essen also had a goal ruled out for a tight offside decision. Koschinat insisted his players could hold their heads high.
The coach acknowledged the pain of losing after a full season’s work. However, he stressed that the team had represented the club with great distinction.
