Liverpool Football Club has dismissed head coach Arne Slot following a disappointing second season at Anfield. The Dutch tactician departs just one year after delivering the club’s 20th top-flight championship.
Slot, aged 47, experienced a dramatic reversal in fortunes. His first campaign brought Premier League glory, but his second ended with a fifth-place finish. The Merseyside club accumulated only 60 points – their poorest return since 2016 and 25 points adrift of champions Arsenal.
The club’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), released a statement explaining the decision. They praised Slot’s work ethic and leadership but admitted the team requires a fresh tactical direction. FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes made the final call to seek new leadership.
Andoni Iraola has emerged as the frontrunner for the position. The 43-year-old Spaniard recently left Bournemouth and shares a professional history with Hughes from their time together on the south coast. Iraola earned recognition for his aggressive, attacking football philosophy – a style Liverpool’s hierarchy believes suits their future plans.
Supporters have reacted with mixed emotions. Some fans argue Slot deserved more time after winning the title, while others believe the change came too late to secure top managerial targets. The club’s record-breaking £415 million spending spree last summer adds further complexity to the situation.
Slot replaced German legend Jurgen Klopp in 2024. His tenure included guiding the team through the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in July. FSG acknowledged his compassionate handling of this difficult period in their farewell message.
