Luis Enrique is now one of football’s most successful managers. He won his third Champions League trophy on Saturday night after his Paris Saint-Germain side beat Arsenal in a penalty shoot-out in Budapest.
The final finished one-all after normal time. Kai Havertz gave the Gunners an early lead. Ousmane Dembélé scored from the spot in the second half to level the match. The score remained unchanged until the final whistle. The clash went to penalties. Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães both missed their spot-kicks for the London club. PSG converted all their attempts to lift the trophy for the second year running.
Only four other managers have won Europe’s top club competition three times. Pep Guardiola, Zinedine Zidane and Bob Paisley share this record. Carlo Ancelotti sits at the top with five titles.
Speaking to Sky after the match, Enrique paid tribute to a figure from his past. He dedicated the victory to Claudio Bisceglia.
“I have to thank my dear friend Claudio Bisceglia,” Enrique said. “He is a Roma player and teacher. He is a true friend.”
Bisceglia is well respected in Italian football. He reportedly helped discussions between current Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and the club’s American owners, the Friedkin family. Former Roma boss José Mourinho once described Bisceglia as a “phenomenon”.
