VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed that Dieter Hecking will remain at the club in a new capacity. The 60-year-old recently guided the Wolves to safety in the Bundesliga. He secured their top-flight status with a victory in the relegation play-off against SC Paderborn.
Starting on June 1st, Hecking will take over as the managing director for sport. He has signed a contract that runs until 2028. This marks a permanent shift from the dugout to the boardroom for the experienced German.
Hecking revealed that he faced a difficult choice about his future. He had to decide between staying on the touchline or moving into an office role. He explained that he made this decision with complete confidence. He now looks forward to the challenges that come with running the sporting side of the club.
However, the new director admitted that the recent struggle still affects him emotionally. He expressed deep gratitude to the club’s supervisory board. He also thanked officials Diego Benaglio and Pirmin Schwegler for their trust and support during the transition.
