Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann faces a tricky decision at left-back following Sunday’s friendly match. Nathaniel Brown impressed during the 4-0 win over Finland at the Borussia-Park. The Eintracht Frankfurt defender started the game and played the full 90 minutes. In contrast, RB Leipzig captain David Raum remained on the substitute bench throughout the clash.
Nagelsmann spoke about the selection dilemma before kick-off. He explained that both players offer high quality and that he must make a final choice before the first tournament match. The coach did not name his preferred starter after the match, keeping the competition wide open. Brown certainly strengthened his case with an energetic performance marauding up and down the left flank.
The two defenders have shared duties during recent international windows. Back in March, Raum started the first friendly against Switzerland. Brown earned his opportunity in the second match against Ghana. With the World Cup opener against Curaçao now just two weeks away, the battle for the starting shirt appears extremely tight.
Speaking to Absolut Fussball after the victory, Brown welcomed the rivalry. He stated that the open competition helps both players improve. “We push each other. It helps both of us,” the 23-year-old explained. His attitude suggests he is ready to fight for his place in the starting eleven.
Team captain Joshua Kimmich also weighed in on the situation. Playing at right-back, Kimmich noticed that Brown pushes higher up the pitch than he does. He praised the combination play between Brown and midfielder Florian Wirtz. However, he also defended Raum, noting that the Leipzig defender has performed well on many previous occasions.
Germany will face the United States in their final warm-up friendly on Saturday. This match may provide further clarity regarding the left-back position. Nagelsmann could decide to rotate the pair throughout the tournament, selecting different players based on the specific opponent and tactical requirements.
