Liverpool Football Club have opted against extending Ibrahima Konaté’s stay at Anfield, paving the way for the defender’s exit when his current agreement concludes. The France international, who arrived on Merseyside from German side RB Leipzig four years ago, will bid farewell to the Premier League outfit upon the expiration of his five-year deal.

According to reports from French publication L’Equipe, negotiations between the 27-year-old centre-back and the Merseyside club reached an advanced stage in May. However, the Reds ultimately decided to withdraw from discussions, rejecting the proposed terms that would have kept the player at the club.

Konaté has developed into one of Europe’s most reliable right-sided central defenders since his arrival in England. Despite hinting publicly at a possible extension earlier this year, those hopes have now faded, forcing him to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have positioned themselves as frontrunners for his signature, though representatives for the player have denied any formal pre-agreement with Los Blancos. The defender has made clear his intention to continue competing at the highest level, explicitly rejecting the possibility of lucrative transfers to football leagues in the Gulf region.
