  • The defender initially told media earlier this week that a muscle injury would prevent him from facing Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Davies says his final availability depends on his recovery progress over the coming days
  • The injury occurred during a match for Bayern Munich last month

Canadian international Alphonso Davies has raised hopes of a surprise comeback for his country’s World Cup opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bayern Munich full-back had previously stated he would miss the June 12 clash due to a muscle problem.

Davies picked up the injury while representing his German club last month. Earlier this week, he told The Sid Seixeiro Show that playing against Bosnia would be impossible. However, he has now softened his stance.

Speaking to Canadian outlet CP24, the 23-year-old explained that his return hinges on his recovery this week. “The first game is coming up pretty quickly,” Davies said. “Me, the coach and the medical team understand how important the first game is. But we also understand that recovery is always an important thing.”

He added: “If I am recovering as good as possible, let us see. If not, then there is no need to rush. Anything is possible in life. For me, it is all depending on how the recovery is going, how these next few days or this week leading up to the game goes.”

Davies will continue to assess his fitness before the match takes place.
