Mason Greenwood looks ready to join Fenerbahce after shaking hands on a deal with the Turkish side. The move ends AS Roma’s hopes of signing the former Manchester United winger this summer.
The 23-year-old has agreed personal terms with Hakan Safi. Safi is running for president at the Istanbul club. He told reporters about the agreement during a press meeting. A video of the announcement appeared on social media.
Greenwood gave fans another strong clue about his future when he followed Safi on Instagram. This online activity suggests he has chosen Turkey over a return to Serie A.
Olympique Marseille bought Greenwood last year but now need cash fast. The Ligue 1 side face serious financial trouble and must sell stars before July. They want €50 million for the English forward.
AS Roma tried hard to sign Greenwood. Their manager Gian Piero Gasperini spoke directly to the player about his project. The Italian club offered €40 million including bonus payments. This bid fell short of the asking price.
The price stays high because of a clause with Manchester United. Marseille must give 50 percent of the transfer fee to their former club. This means they need the full €50 million to keep enough money for themselves.
Now Roma must search for other players to improve their attack. Greenwood seems set for a new chapter in Istanbul instead.
