Harry Kane grabbed the winner as England began their World Cup preparations with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against New Zealand in Tampa, Florida. The Bayern Munich striker nodded home in first-half stoppage time to settle a cagey affair at the Raymond James Stadium.
The match took place in sweltering afternoon heat, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius. England boss Thomas Tuchel used the conditions to test his squad’s fitness, replacing his entire starting line-up at half-time. Djed Spence provided the assist for Kane’s close-range header, which proved enough to defeat the lowest-ranked side at the upcoming tournament.
The Three Lions created numerous opportunities before the break, firing fourteen shots compared to New Zealand’s two. However, poor finishing kept the score level until Kane struck. Ollie Watkins dragged one effort wide, while Marcus Rashford and John Stones also failed to convert good positions.
After the restart, England continued to control proceedings without adding to their tally. Tuchel handed a first senior cap to seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha, the Liverpool prospect who joined the camp with other youthful players. Jude Bellingham impressed during the second period, though the team could not extend their advantage on a bumpy pitch.
Despite the narrow margin, the outing satisfied English hopes. The squad avoided injuries on the difficult surface and gained vital experience of the humid climate they will face during the competition. Kane’s strike marked his seventy-ninth international goal and maintained his excellent form following a prolific season in Germany.
Several key figures missed the contest. Arsenal quartet Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze sat out after their Champions League final exertions, but they will return for the next friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
Kane expressed confidence about his physical condition ahead of the tournament. “I am in the best shape of my career, both physically and mentally,” he told reporters. “The World Cup is the biggest stage, and I cannot wait for it to begin.” The captain also admitted the pitch quality complicated their usual passing style.
Tuchel praised his players’ second-half display, noting improved energy and determination despite the lack of goals. He confirmed the squad remains injury-free and welcomed the returning Arsenal players, who will strengthen the group for the remaining preparation match before the June 17 opener against Croatia in Texas.
