- Former Barcelona director Ramon Planes emerges as alternative to Rangnick
Oliver Glasner has approved a move to take charge of AC Milan. The former Crystal Palace manager now awaits final confirmation from the Serie A giants to begin his new role.
However, the Italian club faces complications with another target. Ralf Rangnick remains under contract with the Austria national team. The Austrian Football Association wants him to stay until the 2028 European Championship. They are currently preparing for the World Cup and hope to extend his deal.
Milan wishes to appoint Rangnick as their new sporting director. The club is rebuilding its entire leadership structure following a mass exodus. Head coach Massimiliano Allegri, sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada, and chief executive Giorgio Furlani all left their positions when the 2025-26 season finished.
Glasner recently held talks with club owner Gerry Cardinale and football advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He presented his vision for the team’s style of play during these meetings. Italian media reports suggest he is now the leading candidate for the job ahead of names like Mauricio Pochettino and Arne Slot.
The appointment of Glasner does not depend on Rangnick joining the club. If the German cannot leave his national team post, Milan will turn to Ramon Planes. The Spaniard previously worked as a director at Barcelona.
Should the Milan deal collapse, Glasner plans to take a short break from management. He would then look for a position at another major European club during the 2026-27 campaign.
