Luis Diaz announced himself on the global stage with a sparkling performance as Colombia opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan. The winger contributed both a goal and an assist to guide his side past the tournament debutants in an entertaining Group K clash.
The Bayern Munich attacker has arrived in the Middle East with impressive form, having contributed to 49 goals in 51 matches for his club this season. He demonstrated that quality throughout the match, running at the Uzbekistan defence with pace and purpose.
With all 48 teams now having played their opening fixtures, the tournament picture is becoming clearer. This World Cup has belonged to the superstars so far, and Diaz showed he belongs alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane in the limelight.
The South Americans nearly opened the scoring after half an hour when Diaz struck the woodwork following a darting run. Five minutes later, they did take the lead through Daniel Muñoz, who showed excellent technique to volley home from Diaz’s defence-splitting pass.
Uzbekistan, competing in their first ever World Cup finals, refused to crumble. They found an equaliser on 60 minutes when Abbosbek Fayzullaev headed past the goalkeeper to spark celebrations among their travelling supporters.
The joy proved short-lived. Diaz restored Colombia’s advantage in the 65th minute, cutting inside and curling a precise finish into the far corner. The game appeared settled when Jaminton Campaz headed home Cucho Hernández’s cross in the eighth minute of added time, though Uzbekistan’s Bekhruz Karimov nearly reduced the deficit when his powerful effort rattled the crossbar.
This tournament has quickly developed into a showcase for individual brilliance. Teams without world-class talent have struggled to make an impact, whilst those with match-winners like Diaz look capable of making deep runs into the knockout stages.
