Harry Kane has disclosed that a passionate half-time address from manager Thomas Tuchel motivated the squad to secure victory in their first game at the 2026 World Cup. The England captain explained that Tuchel urged the players to remove their shackles and demonstrate their true capabilities to the global audience.
The Three Lions twice lost their lead during the opening 45 minutes in Dallas. Kane had initially put England ahead from the penalty spot and then scored with a header following Declan Rice’s corner. These strikes brought him level with Gary Lineker’s record for the most goals by an England player at World Cup finals. However, Croatia responded on both occasions to make it 2-2 at the interval.
“He told us to take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go. He said what’s the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be,” Kane stated regarding Tuchel’s rousing speech. The captain noted that the team emerged for the second period with full intensity, and their opponents could not match their tempo. Jude Bellingham restored England’s lead before substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the result late in the match.
Jude Bellingham supported Kane’s comments about the dressing room atmosphere at half-time. The midfielder explained that the manager did not shout or create drama, but instead delivered exactly what the mature group required. Bellingham highlighted that the squad contains excellent leaders who understood the standards they needed to reach.
There were injury concerns when Declan Rice left the pitch during the second half. Tuchel confirmed that the Arsenal midfielder experienced discomfort in his lower back and upper hamstring. The German coach explained that he never wanted to remove Rice from the action, but decided to protect the player rather than take risks. Rice later reassured his manager that the situation was under control.
Tuchel acknowledged that his players displayed nerves during the first half despite taking the lead twice. He observed that the team played too many backward passes and frequently returned the ball to their goalkeeper. The manager suggested that wanting everything to be perfect sometimes leads to overthinking. He expressed hope that the squad would learn from this experience as the tournament progresses.
Reflecting on his half-time words, Tuchel stated he encouraged his players to calm their nerves and stick to their principles. He assured them that his opinion of them built over the previous 17 days would remain unchanged regardless of the result. He demanded bravery, courage and tenacity on the front foot.
