- Felix Zwayer will referee the crucial Group D match between USA and Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- The German official has a controversial history involving a 2005 match-fixing scandal.
- This fixture will mark Zwayer’s first appearance as lead referee at a World Cup tournament.
- The winner of this clash will secure automatic qualification to the knockout phase.
The United States Men’s National Team played very well to beat Paraguay 4-1 in their first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Now, they will face Australia in an important second game. This match will decide what happens next in Group D.
The fixture takes place on Friday, 19 June in Seattle. The match starts at 10:00 PM East African Time. The winning team will go through to the knockout stage. If the USA wins and Paraguay do not beat Türkiye, the Americans will finish top of the group.
Felix Zwayer, a referee from Germany, will control this match. He is 43 years old and comes from Berlin. UEFA ranks him in their elite category. He has refereed at the highest level in Europe for more than ten years.
This World Cup is special for Zwayer. He worked as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, this is his first time as the main referee at the tournament.
But Zwayer’s past includes serious problems. In 2005, German football had a big scandal about match-fixing. Referee Robert Hoyzer took money to fix games. Zwayer helped Hoyzer in one match and got 300 euros. Football officials later banned him for six months.
People remembered this scandal again in 2021. After a difficult match between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Dortmund player Jude Bellingham spoke out. Dortmund lost the game after some bad decisions.
“You give a referee who fixed matches before the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?” Bellingham said.
Now, Zwayer will referee in front of the whole world. Fans in Kenya and everywhere will watch carefully as the USA play Australia for a place in the next round.
