France overcame a two-hour storm delay to defeat Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia on Monday, securing their place in the World Cup round of 32. Kylian Mbappe marked his 100th international appearance with a brace that lifted him to second among the tournament’s all-time scorers with 16 goals.

Kick-off at Lincoln Financial Field was postponed as heavy rain, thunder and lightning forced organisers to delay gate openings and advise supporters to avoid travel to the Group I fixture. The interruption marked the first significant weather delay of the tournament, though regulations mandating a 30-minute suspension for lightning within eight miles of the venue were ultimately superseded by the lengthier postponement.

Iraq’s long road ends in defeat

The result dashed hopes of a victorious return for Iraq, appearing at the finals for the first time in 40 years. The Lions of Mesopotamia secured the 48th and final berth at the expanded tournament through a dramatic qualification campaign overseen by Australian manager Graham Arnold, who was appointed twelve months ago following the dismissal of predecessor Jesús Casas.

Arnold’s side faced elimination last November before midfielder Amir Al-Ammari converted from the spot in the 107th minute against the United Arab Emirates in Basra, awarded by VAR in the final moments of added time. The strike kept their hopes alive, though regional conflict subsequently closed airspace and forced the squad to endure a 29-hour odyssey to the decisive play-off in Monterrey via a 12-hour drive to Amman followed by a 17-hour flight.

Striker Aymen Hussein, who plays for Al-Karma and is the highest-paid player in the Iraq Stars League, scored the decisive goal against Bolivia to seal qualification. The squad carried the weight of expectation from 46 million people back home, with Arnold acknowledging the “hell of a lot of stress and a lot of pressure” his players shouldered.

Hussein led the line in Philadelphia alongside 22-year-old winger Marko Farji, who recently completed a €1.3 million transfer to Italian club Venezia from Norwegian side Strømsgodset. Former Manchester United academy midfielder Zidane Iqbal featured for Iraq, while Al-Ammari, a Brøndby IF graduate, anchored the midfield.

Mbappe makes history

France had already established a lead by the interval before Mbappe’s second and a late third completed the scoring. The victory secures their progression to the knockout phase with a group match to spare, while Iraq must regroup ahead of their remaining fixtures.

For Mbappe, the goals on his centenary appearance move him to within reach of the all-time World Cup scoring record, capping a night of individual and collective achievement that weathered both the Philadelphia storm and resilient Iraqi resistance.
