Trabzonspor intensify pursuit
Turkish club Trabzonspor have stepped up their efforts to sign Roma striker Artem Dovbyk after an initial approach was rebuffed. The Serie A side rejected a proposal for a loan move with an option to buy, but negotiations have gathered pace as Trabzonspor prepare to return with an improved bid structured as a permanent transfer.
The Ukraine international finds himself surplus to requirements at the Stadio Olimpico following a tactical assessment by coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The Roma manager has made clear that Dovbyk does not fit his preferred style of football, placing the 29-year-old on the transfer market this summer despite his contributions to the team’s Champions League qualification.
Fitness concerns complicate deal
Dovbyk’s availability comes with complications. The centre-forward managed only 18 competitive appearances during the current campaign, scoring three goals and providing two assists across Serie A and Europa League fixtures. His involvement was severely restricted by a succession of injury problems that disrupted his rhythm and limited his influence.
These fitness issues have made potential suitors cautious. Trabzonspor regard a comprehensive medical examination as absolutely crucial before committing to any agreement. The Turkish club are unwilling to proceed to a final handshake until they have verified that the striker has overcome the physical setbacks that plagued his season in Italy.
Roma’s Greenwood objective
The Giallorossi are motivated sellers. They have earmarked Olympique Marseille winger Mason Greenwood as the ideal replacement for Dovbyk, but Marseille’s €50 million valuation presents a significant financial obstacle. Roma therefore need to generate funds through the Ukrainian’s sale to finance their pursuit of the English forward.
This financial imperative explains their rejection of Trabzonspor’s initial loan proposal. The Italian club require a permanent departure to unlock the necessary resources for Greenwood. Trabzonspor’s willingness to pivot towards a purchase offer rather than a temporary arrangement could prove key to breaking the deadlock.
The next phase of discussions will determine whether the Turkish side’s revised bid meets Roma’s expectations, and whether Dovbyk can pass the stringent medical checks required to seal his move away from Rome.
