Oxford United have appointed Aaron Ramsey as their new head coach, handing the former Arsenal and Wales midfielder his first permanent managerial role. The 35-year-old replaces Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed on Saturday.

Ramsey assumes control just months after retiring from playing in April 2025, following a brief spell with Mexican club Pumas UNAM. His only previous experience in the dugout came during a three-match interim spell at Cardiff City earlier this year.

The appointment arrives over six weeks after the Championship season concluded, with Oxford having finished 22nd and suffered relegation to League One. Players are due to report for pre-season training imminently, leaving Ramsey limited time to assess his squad before the new campaign.

Ramsey’s managerial vision

The former Juventus and Nice midfielder outlined his philosophy, stressing high standards and a clear tactical identity.

“From my discussions with the club, I can sense the ambition and desire for success, which gives me great excitement about this opportunity,” Ramsey said. “This is a moment I have been preparing for over many years. I’ve played under some of the best managers in the game and experienced high-pressure environments throughout my career.”

He added: “I want to use what I’ve learned to bring a culture of high standards, professionalism and work ethic to this talented group of players. My teams will play with a clear identity, be built on elite habits, with a commitment to improving every day.”

Immediate challenges

Ramsey joins a growing cohort of young managers in League One, including his former Arsenal teammate Jack Wilshere at Luton Town. The pair have already faced each other as coaches when Ramsey was in interim charge at Cardiff and Wilshere was managing Norwich.

However, the new Oxford head coach faces pressing practical concerns. The squad currently contains no new signings despite the managerial change, and Ramsey may need to settle existing players who could be restless following relegation and Bloomfield’s departure. The board expects a more front-foot attacking approach after two seasons of battling relegation.

During his playing career, Ramsey made 369 appearances for the Gunners, securing three FA Cup triumphs, and earned 86 caps for Wales. He featured prominently in their historic run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
