Mason Greenwood has set his sights on joining Roma this summer, rejecting substantial financial packages from Fenerbahce and Al-Hilal in favour of Champions League football in Italy. According to Corriere dello Sport, the English forward has communicated to Roma manager Gianluca Gasperini and the club’s hierarchy that the Giallorossi project represents his priority destination, despite the superior wages on offer elsewhere.

Valuation Dispute Threatens Deal

However, significant obstacles remain before the 24-year-old can complete his switch to the Italian capital. Marseille, Greenwood’s current employers, are demanding €55 million for the striker, whilst Roma are preparing an offer in the region of €45-50 million. The French side are obligated to pay Manchester United 40% of any transfer fee received, further complicating the negotiations as they seek to maximise their return.

The Italian club may need to structure payments in instalments to satisfy Marseille’s financial requirements whilst bridging the valuation gap. This approach could accommodate the French club’s June 30 deadline whilst meeting their core financial demands.

Turkish and Saudi Proposals Rejected

The delay has allowed rival clubs to intensify their pursuit. Tuttosport reports that Fenerbahce submitted a €35 million bid for Greenwood, which Marseille dismissed as insufficient. The Turkish club reportedly offered the player a base salary of €12 million per season, supplemented by extensive bonuses tied to goals, assists and trophies. Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have also tabled a proposal described as almost beyond market value for both club and player.

Greenwood remains unmoved by these financial incentives. At 24 and playing at his peak, the forward prioritises competing at the highest level in European football, viewing a move to Serie A as a pathway to potentially revive his international prospects with England.

Pre-Season Timeline Adds Pressure

Time is emerging as the critical factor in negotiations. Corriere dello Sport indicates that Greenwood aims to start pre-season training with his new employers during the opening ten days of July, creating a narrow window for Roma to finalise an agreement. Gasperini’s tactical system would place the forward at the centre of Roma’s attacking plans, offering the platform he desires to develop his career in one of Europe’s major leagues.
