Bezzi backs Inter caution after Palestra opts for Chelsea
Italian journalist Gianni Bezzi has defended Inter Milan’s careful approach to recruiting Palestra, suggesting the Serie A giants were correct to deliberate extensively before the promising right-back elected to join Chelsea instead.
Speaking to TMW Radio, with quotes carried by FCInter1908, Bezzi argued that Inter’s hesitation reflected prudent recruitment rather than indecision. “I understand Inter’s behaviour too, they thought about it a lot before closing the operation,” he said. “Is Palestra already a player of such quality that he can represent a turning point for Inter and Chelsea? For me he was someone who still needed a step of growth.”
Chelsea intervention seals switch
The Nerazzurri had been on the verge of securing the defender’s signature before the Premier League club intervened to alter the player’s destination. Palestra’s eventual choice was driven by factors beyond pure sporting ambition. Bezzi noted that the player made a personal decision to compete in one of the most important leagues, though financial incentives also influenced the outcome. “It was also an important economic choice,” the journalist explained.
Quality questions persist
Bezzi was particularly sceptical about whether the young full-back warrants the extraordinary attention his transfer has generated this summer. “It is a great exaggeration, Palestra is no Maldini,” he stated. “Maybe he will explode, but I have some doubts, and Inter were right to think carefully about it.”
The assessment suggests Inter’s reluctance to rush the deal stemmed from genuine doubts about the defender’s readiness for elite competition rather than merely protracted financial negotiations. While missing out on a highly touted prospect represents a blow to their recruitment plans, Bezzi’s analysis implies the Milan club may ultimately have avoided a costly misstep should Palestra’s development fail to match the lofty expectations currently surrounding him.
