AS Roma have completed the sale of midfielder Alessandro Romano to Cagliari in a deal worth up to €6.5 million. The agreement includes an initial fee of €5 million plus a further €1.5 million in performance-related bonuses, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The 20-year-old, a product of Roma’s youth academy, has agreed personal terms with the Serie A club and will now finalise his transfer. Romano spent last season on loan at Spezia in Serie B, where he sought to build experience despite his limited exposure to top-flight football.

Financial Fair Play deadline

The sale provides a timely boost as Roma race to raise funds before the June 30 deadline to meet Financial Fair Play requirements. The Giallorossi face strict settlement limits with UEFA and must balance their accounts, even after securing qualification for the Champions League.

The club had been hoping to generate significant income through the sale of Argentine winger Matias Soulé to the Saudi Pro League, but that potential transfer has reportedly stalled. Romano’s departure therefore contributes to the club’s urgent need for sales, though additional departures may be required before the month-end cut-off.

Career progression

Romano has made just two substitute appearances in Serie A and has represented Switzerland at various youth international levels. The move to Sardinia offers him the chance to establish himself in the top flight after struggling to break into Roma’s first team.

Cagliari will hope the young midfielder’s experience in Serie B translates into regular contributions at the higher level. For Roma, the sale alleviates some immediate financial pressure as they continue negotiations on other potential outgoings.
