Cape Verde have secured a historic place in the World Cup Round of 32 after drawing with Saudi Arabia in Houston. The result, coupled with Uruguay’s loss to Spain, confirmed the debutants as Group H runners-up and set up a last-32 meeting with Argentina.
Bubista’s players celebrated on the pitch at the final whistle, huddling around a mobile telephone to watch the closing moments of the simultaneous fixture between Spain and Uruguay. The confirmation of Uruguay’s defeat sparked jubilant scenes among the Cape Verdean contingent, who had earlier played out a hard-fought stalemate with the Saudis.
Vozinha inspires defensive resilience
The match belonged to Vozinha, the Cape Verde goalkeeper who has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers. His name drew an ear-splitting roar from the crowd when read out before kick-off, and he responded with another commanding display between the posts.
Saudi Arabia, knowing only victory would secure their progression, struggled to test Vozinha significantly until first-half stoppage time. Mohamed Kanno rose to meet a cross from Abdulelah al-Amri but headed straight at the goalkeeper, allowing him to make a comfortable save.
The Saudis suffered an early setback when centre-back Hassan al-Tambakti sustained a nasty-looking injury and was stretchered off midway through the first half, with Ali Lajami replacing him. Despite the disruption, the Green Falcons could not find the breakthrough they desperately needed.
Blue Sharks weather the storm
Cape Verde, who handed first starts to Paulo and Wagner Pina in defence, looked the more threatening side for long periods. Willy Semedo forced an untidy save from Mohammed al-Owais during the opening exchanges, while Jamairo Monteiro and Kevin Pina both went close from distance after the interval.
Ryan Mendes, retaining the captain’s armband, led by example with a penetrating run that was eventually crowded out by Saudi defenders. The best chance to settle the affair fell to substitute Laros Duarte in the 74th minute, but al-Owais produced a brilliant save to divert his shot wide.
Saudi Arabia’s only clear opportunity in the closing stages fell to Abdullah al-Hamdaan, who shot straight at Vozinha from 15 yards when well placed to score.
Argentina await in Miami
The draw proved sufficient for Cape Verde to advance, thanks to Spain’s victory in the group’s other fixture. The Blue Sharks will now travel to Miami to face reigning champions Argentina and Lionel Messi in the last-32.
The fixture presents a tantalising prospect of a meeting between Messi and Vozinha, whose performances have captured the imagination of neutral supporters during the tournament. For Saudi Arabia, the result confirms their elimination at the group stage despite having entered the final round with their fate in their own hands.
