Colombia secured top spot in Group K after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Portugal in Miami, setting up a FIFA World Cup last-32 encounter with Ghana. Portugal advanced as runners-up and will face Croatia in the next round.

The South Americans thought they had snatched victory in stoppage time when Davinson Sánchez headed home from a free-kick, but VAR intervened to rule the effort out for offside. It proved the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in an open contest that belied its scoreline.

Chances go begging

Luis Díaz threatened inside the opening minute, his delivery from the left taking a deflection that fell to Jhon Córdoba, who headed over unmarked from close range. The Bayern Munich forward had earlier forced Diogo Costa into a smart one-handed save, while Portugal’s best first-half opportunity came when Bruno Fernandes tested Camilo Vargas before Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kick from the rebound was blocked.

Colombia carried the greater threat after the interval. Richard Ríos fired wide from a promising position shortly after the hour mark, while Jhon Arias forced another save from Costa as Néstor Lorenzo’s side pushed for a winner. James Rodríguez saw a goalbound effort desperately cleared by Renato Veiga, and substitute Luis Suárez spurned a late opportunity after creating space inside the penalty area.

Portugal offered little until the closing stages, when Rafael Leão’s introduction from the bench provided some impetus. Diogo Dalot curled wide from a corner routine, but Roberto Martínez’s side rarely looked like claiming the victory that would have seen them top the group.

Team news

Néstor Lorenzo made three changes to the Colombian side that started the previous two fixtures. Jhon Córdoba led the line in place of Luis Suárez, while Santiago Arias and Johan Machado replaced Daniel Muñoz and Mojica at full-back. Jefferson Lerma retained his place in midfield alongside fellow Crystal Palace player Muñoz, who began among the substitutes.

Portugal boss Martínez handed a start to Rúben Neves in central midfield, with João Neves making way. Cristiano Ronaldo captained the side and started up front, supported by João Félix, Bruno Fernandes and Pedro Neto.

The result confirms Colombia as group winners, with a partisan Miami crowd creating a vibrant atmosphere inside the stadium. Portugal progress despite a subdued display, but manager Martínez acknowledged his side’s shortcomings. “We let Colombia have the match they wanted,” he said. “We did not control possession as much as we wanted. We weren’t able to control the game or use our talent.”

Colombia will face Ghana in the last 32, while Portugal must navigate a tricky tie against Croatia to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
