RB Leipzig have reignited their interest in Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri, 12 months after a previous approach failed to materialise. The German international has emerged as a primary target for new head coach Martin Demichelis, who is reshaping the club’s midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Tactical reshuffle drives interest
Demichelis intends to deploy a system featuring two number eight midfielders, a setup that has increased the urgency to add depth and experience to the squad. The need has become more acute following confirmation that Christoph Baumgartner faces several months on the sidelines through injury.
Amiri is viewed as a player capable of providing an immediate boost rather than merely covering for the Austrian international. Once Baumgartner returns to fitness, the pair could operate together in Demichelis’s preferred configuration.
Financial and contractual obstacles
Despite the clear tactical fit, any significant expenditure from Leipzig remains contingent on outgoing transfers. The club will only sanction major signings once sufficient financial headroom has been created through player sales, suggesting a potential deal could develop slowly over the coming weeks.
Mainz occupy a strong negotiating position. The 29-year-old is tied to the club until 2028, leaving the Rheinhessen outfit under no pressure to sanction a departure. Amiri himself hinted at uncertainty regarding his future following Mainz’s final fixture of the 2025/26 season, declining to rule out a summer move when questioned.
With Leipzig’s transfer budget restricted and Mainz holding a long-term contract, negotiations are likely to prove complex unless the Saxony club can secure substantial fees for existing squad members.
