Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón has surpassed Walter Zenga’s 36-year-old World Cup record for consecutive unbeaten minutes. The milestone was reached during Spain’s 3-0 triumph over Austria, extending Simón’s run to 519 minutes without conceding across two tournaments.

The previous benchmark of 517 minutes was established by Italian shot-stopper Zenga during Italia 90. While Simón’s achievement spans multiple World Cup editions, Zenga’s record was set within a single tournament.

Zenga responds with grace and humour

Zenga, working as a pundit for RSI Sport in Switzerland, offered his congratulations whilst drawing a subtle distinction between the two feats. “The records are made to be beaten. It had to happen sooner or later,” he stated.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper noted his satisfaction at maintaining the record for 36 years. He pointed out that his milestone came in one World Cup rather than across two separate competitions, though he added that this difference did not diminish Simón’s accomplishment.

Zenga also highlighted the lack of recognition typically afforded to goalkeepers compared with attacking players. “Nobody in Italy remembers it, nobody cares,” he said regarding his previous mark. He suggested that while goal-scoring records receive widespread attention, defensive achievements tend to be overlooked, remarking: “People never talk about the goalkeepers.”

The clean sheet against Austria demonstrates Simón’s reliability as Spain advance in the tournament. Establishing a new benchmark of 519 minutes underlines his consistency on the global stage and provides Spain with a solid foundation as they pursue further success.
