Fenerbahce have issued a formal statement denying that club representatives are in France to negotiate Mason Greenwood’s transfer, contradicting persistent reports that the Turkish side have tabled a fresh bid approaching Olympique Marseille’s €50 million valuation.
The Istanbul club dismissed claims that members of their football committee had travelled for face-to-face talks with Marseille officials. “This statement has become necessary due to the repeated dissemination of inaccurate transfer news to the public in recent days and the systematic attempt to mislead Fenerbahce fans,” the club declared. Despite this denial, Turkish transfer specialist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu and French outlet Footmercato maintain that Fenerbahce director Feridun Gecgel is presently in Marseille pursuing an agreement for the 24-year-old forward.
Roma Delegation Presses Ahead
The conflicting accounts over Fenerbahce’s involvement emerge as Serie A club Roma press ahead with their own pursuit. Two senior figures from the Italian side have flown to France in an effort to secure the England international, having prepared a €45 million offer that includes performance-related add-ons and a clause entitling them to a percentage of any future sale.
Greenwood has become a priority target for Roma following the appointment of head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who has identified the forward as crucial to reinforcing the club’s attacking options. However, Fenerbahce’s reported willingness to edge closer to Marseille’s €50 million demands threatens to overtake the Italian club’s position. Turkish sources claim Fenerbahce’s latest bid is significantly higher than their previous €30 million offer, which Marseille rejected.
United Clause and Atletico Interest
Any concluded deal involves significant financial complexity due to Greenwood’s Manchester United heritage. The Premier League club are entitled to 40 per cent of the eventual transfer fee, meaning Marseille would receive only a portion of the total sum despite their firm valuation stance.
Greenwood’s productivity justifies the interest, with the 24-year-old having scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists in 45 competitive matches last term. That output has sustained Marseille’s resolve to hold out for their asking price even as negotiations intensify.
Atletico Madrid continue to monitor developments, though the La Liga side face constraints that would require player sales before they could formalise any approach for Greenwood. The forward is understood to be opposed to a move to Saudi Arabia despite approaches from the region, narrowing his likely destination to European clubs.
