Alphonso Davies has described his injury-plagued World Cup as “one of the toughest challenges of my career” after a hamstring problem restricted the Canada captain to just 15 minutes of action throughout the finals.

The Bayern Munich full-back watched from the bench as the co-hosts exited the competition with a 3-0 loss to Morocco in the round of 16. Davies did not feel fit enough to feature because of the hamstring complaint that has hampered his campaign.

The 25-year-old has been a pivotal figure in Canada’s recent international rise, making his absence particularly painful for the North American side as they sought to advance beyond the knockout stage.

Emotional admission

In a candid statement posted on Instagram, Davies opened up about his frustration at not performing at his peak on football’s biggest stage.

“Personally, this tournament was one of the toughest challenges of my career,” Davies wrote. “After suffering a hamstring injury, I wasn’t able to perform at the level I know I’m capable of. It hurts knowing I couldn’t give my all when my team and my country needed it most.”

Despite his disappointment, Davies refused to make excuses for the team’s elimination. “I don’t believe in excuses. Football is full of setbacks, and how you respond is what defines you,” he added. “This disappointment will only motivate me to recover, work harder, and come back stronger than ever.”

Looking ahead

Davies also expressed gratitude to supporters and vowed that Canada would learn from the experience. “Not the way we wanted our World Cup journey to end. Representing Canada on the biggest stage in football is something I’ll never take for granted,” he said. “I’m proud to wear this badge and to stand alongside a group of players who gave everything for our country.”

The defender will now focus on regaining full fitness ahead of Bayern Munich’s 2026/27 campaign, with the Bundesliga club hoping to have their key man back to his explosive best when domestic action resumes.
