FSV Mainz 05 are in advanced negotiations to sign FC Metz captain Gauthier Hein, with the Bundesliga club having submitted a formal offer for the 29-year-old attacker. According to Onze Mondial, talks between all parties are reportedly positive as the German side push to secure their target ahead of the new campaign.
The France-born winger, who can also operate as a number 10, is expected to depart Metz this summer following the club’s relegation to Ligue 2. Hein contributed eight goals and seven assists across 31 appearances last term, according to Onze Mondial, though some reports suggest he provided eight assists. Either way, his consistent output could not prevent Les Grenats from dropping into the second tier.
Hein’s contractual situation theoretically strengthens Metz’s negotiating position. The Thionville native, who progressed through the club’s youth academy before a spell at AJ Auxerre, is tied to the Stade Saint-Symphorien outfit until 2028. Despite this long-term security, the player appears set for a new challenge abroad.
European ambition over MLS
This potential transfer would mark Hein’s first professional move outside France. The attacking midfielder previously attracted interest from Major League Soccer, with FC Dallas reportedly courting him during the winter window. However, Hein has demonstrated a clear preference to continue his career on the continent, making the Bundesliga an appealing destination should terms be finalised.
