Giovanni Malagò has imposed a strict deadline to resolve Italy’s leadership vacuum, declaring that the federation will confirm both a new technical director and head coach within days. The FIGC President revealed that Paolo Maldini remains the leading contender to oversee the national team’s technical operations, though alternatives are prepared should the former Milan defender decline.

Speaking to Radio Anch’io lo Sport, Malagò explained that Maldini’s pedigree as both a player and executive makes him ideal for the role, which will serve as the primary link between the federation president and the Federal Council. However, the offer has remained unanswered for several days, prompting Malagò to acknowledge contingency plans. “It’s also necessary to have a Plan B, and perhaps even a Plan C,” he stated, expressing calm over the delay by suggesting Maldini’s hesitation indicates thorough consideration rather than disinterest.

Coach appointment hinges on technical director

The search for a new Azzurri manager remains closely tied to the technical director appointment. Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini have emerged as the principal names under consideration, though Malagò insisted he has not yet held discussions with any potential candidates. “The only truth is that I haven’t spoken to any coach; that would deeply contradict my intention, which is to evaluate and decide with the technical director who it will be,” he clarified.

Malagò suggested the final shortlist might extend beyond Conte and Mancini, indicating the federation is keeping its options open until the technical framework is established. The president emphasised the need for patience, stating that definitive moves would follow once the director position is filled.

Serie A clubs offer financial backing

The appointment process has received a significant boost from domestic clubs. Serie A sides have indicated willingness to contribute towards the new coach’s salary, relieving some of the financial burden on the federation. Malagò welcomed this support but cautioned against focusing excessively on financial matters rather than sporting merit.

He interpreted the clubs’ readiness to assist as recognition that Italian football has “reached the bottom of the barrel” and requires collective rebuilding. Malagò outlined a six-year vision stretching to Euro 2032, arguing that international tournament exposure increases player value and creates economic returns for clubs.

The federation chief aims to complete both appointments by the weekend at the latest, ending months of uncertainty following Italy’s disappointing World Cup qualification campaign. The technical director will assume immediate responsibility for shaping the squad and working alongside whichever coach is ultimately selected.
