Alexander Nübel is scheduled to undergo a medical examination in Istanbul on Wednesday as his protracted move from Bayern Munich to Besiktas nears completion.

The German goalkeeper has agreed a severance package with Bayern Munich to facilitate his departure, Bild reports. The agreement allows Nübel to terminate his contract, which had been set to run until 2029, by waiving the lucrative salary he would have been entitled to receive over the next four years.

The two clubs have reportedly settled on a transfer fee of €6.5 million, with a further €5 million available in performance-related add-ons. This represents a significant financial commitment from the Turkish side, though the structure of the deal protects Bayern’s interests through the bonus payments.

Five years on the periphery

Nübel joined Bayern Munich in 2020 after leaving Schalke on a free transfer, but he has been unable to displace Manuel Neuer as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. During his five years under contract at the Allianz Arena, the 27-year-old has spent the majority of his time away from the club on loan. He gained valuable experience with two seasons at Monaco in Ligue 1 before spending the last three years at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

The move to Besiktas would provide Nübel with the stability of a permanent position after years of temporary arrangements. For Bayern, the severance agreement clears a significant wage obligation from their books while generating a transfer fee for a player who had no clear pathway into the starting eleven.

What happens next

With the medical examination scheduled for Wednesday in Istanbul, an official announcement from the Turkish club could follow shortly thereafter, provided there are no complications with the physical assessment. Nübel will hope to establish himself as first choice at Vodafone Park, offering him the regular first-team football that has eluded him since his high-profile move to Munich five years ago.
